Nalanda Gedige is an ancient stone temple situated within the Matale district. The initial location of the temple was considered the centre of Sri Lanka.

Nalanda Gedige is also known to be a temple worshipped by the Buddhists. Along with its prolonged history, some scholars suggest that the ancient temple is of Mahayana faith which was known for its tantric lessons and learnings. The Nalanda Gedige temple's architecture aligns Hindu temples, such as the entrance of the temple, a mandapa (pillared hall), and an ambulatory round to the centre of the holy temple. The combination of art and religion highlights the Nalanda Gedige temples' beauty and allows one to understand the rich and deep meaning behind the masterpiece.


🕰️ Historical Significance

The temple was originally situated at what was considered the geographical center of Sri Lanka. In the late 19th century, under the guidance of Archaeological Commissioner H.C.P. Bell, efforts were made to preserve and protect the site. In the 1980s, due to the threat of inundation from the Bowatenna Tank, the temple was dismantled and meticulously reconstructed at its current location to safeguard its heritage. ​

  • Design Fusion: The temple's architecture blends elements from both Buddhist and Hindu traditions. The main hall and the presence of a Kubera statue (Hindu god of wealth) on the southern side of the sanctuary's tympanum are indicative of Hindu influences. 

  • Structure Layout: The temple follows a traditional Hindu temple design, featuring a mandapa (entrance hall), a short passage leading to the sanctum, and an ambulatory around the central holy area.​

  • Decorative Elements: The façade is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures, predominantly in the South Indian style, reflecting the artistic influences of the period

  • Location: Situated approximately 20 km north of Matale, accessible via the A9 highway.​

  • Opening Hours: The temple is open daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Visitors are advised to dress modestly, adhering to a respectful dress code.​

  • Entry Fee: There is no formal entry fee; however, donations are welcomed to support the site's maintenance.​

Muthumariamman Temple, also known as Arulmigu Sri Muthumari Amman Kovil is an ancient, colourful temple in Matala, Central Province, Sri Lanka.
