Pitawala Pathana

 



Pitawala 'Pathana' is a grassland located in the Matale district. It is more famously known for its resemblance to World's End in the Horton Plains National Park. It is a part of in the Knuckles Conservation Forest located in the central province.

This grassland provides an overwhelming view of the valleys and the Knuckles mountain range. Pitawala Pathana also has significant ecological value and a host to a wide range of endemic species.
Pitawala Pathana is a distinctive grassland, spread over a vast area covering about 10 ha of the sloping rock slab. Pitawala Pathana offers a wholesome package of beautiful velvety grass landscape, breathtaking views of the mountains and a close encounter with endemic species.

Pitawala Pathana is a montane grassland, characterized by:

It's a great example of a miniature ecosystem, with its own water retention system, drainage patterns, and plant adaptations.

🧭 How to Get There

  • From Matale or Kandy, head towards the town of Rattota

  • Continue towards Riverston (a scenic area in the Knuckles Range)

  • Pitawala Pathana is a few kilometers from the Riverston Tower area

  • Best reached by private vehicle or hired transport


🌤️ Best Time to Visit

  • December to April is ideal – dry, clear skies, and cooler temperatures

  • Avoid during heavy monsoon seasons (May–August, October–November)

  • Bring water, sunscreen, and a light jacket (weather can change quickly)

  • Wear comfortable shoes – path can be rocky and uneven

  • Respect the environment – no littering, no loud noises
